What the Heck is Aluminum Oxide?<\/h3>\n

First things first, let’s get clear on what aluminum oxide is. Aluminum oxide, also known as alumina, is a chemical compound made up of aluminum and oxygen. Its formula is Al\u2082O\u2083. Where Does Aluminum Oxide Come From?<\/h3>\n

The main source of aluminum oxide is bauxite, a sedimentary rock. Bauxite is basically a mixture of aluminum hydroxide minerals, along with some iron oxides, silica, and titanium dioxide. It’s found all over the world, but some of the major bauxite – producing countries are Australia, Guinea, Brazil, and China.<\/p>\n

In Australia, for example, bauxite is mined in large open – pit mines. The mining process is pretty intense. Heavy machinery is used to dig up the bauxite ore from the ground. Once the ore is out, it’s transported to a processing plant.<\/p>\n

From Bauxite to Aluminum Oxide<\/h3>\n

The process of turning bauxite into aluminum oxide is called the Bayer process. It was developed by Karl Josef Bayer in 1888, and it’s still the most widely used method today.<\/p>\n

Here’s how it works: First, the bauxite ore is crushed and mixed with a hot solution of sodium hydroxide. This mixture is then heated under pressure in a digester. The sodium hydroxide dissolves the aluminum hydroxide in the bauxite, forming a sodium aluminate solution. The other impurities, like iron oxides and silica, settle to the bottom as a red mud.<\/p>\n

The sodium aluminate solution is then filtered to remove the red mud. After that, it’s cooled and seeded with small crystals of aluminum hydroxide. These crystals cause the dissolved aluminum hydroxide to precipitate out of the solution. The precipitated aluminum hydroxide is then washed and calcined (heated at a high temperature) in a kiln. This removes the water from the aluminum hydroxide, turning it into aluminum oxide.<\/p>\n
